Veteran Strong USA Therapeutic Riding

We incorporate horses into mental health treatment for people. As herd animals with prey instincts, horses are experts at reading nonverbal communication. Their responses often remind clients of their goals, personal challenges, and/or relationships with themselves and others. This provides a safe environment to work through these things, where the horses only change when we do.

The Eagala Model is the global standard for equine-assisted psychotherapy and personal development, which incorporates horses' unique herd instincts to help clients heal. Eagala provides training, certification, and support for equine specialists and mental health practitioners around the world.

At Veteran Strong USA, we are committed to improving the mental health and well-being of veterans through innovative and compassionate approaches. Our Equine-Assisted Therapy sessions, guided by the Eagala Model, offer a powerful tool for personal transformation and healing.

What is the Eagala Model?

The Eagala Model is a professional mental health framework where a licensed therapist and Equine Specialist work with you and the horses to support your therapeutic journey. It’s not about horsemanship or riding; instead, the focus is on using the horses' natural sensitivity to human emotions to help you process trauma, gain insights into your behavior, and develop self-awareness in a safe, non-judgmental space.

How does an
Eagala session work?

During a session, you will interact with horses on the ground while your therapist and Equine Specialist guide the process. The horses’ natural reactions to your energy and movements serve as symbolic representations of your challenges, helping you gain new perspectives. This client-directed process allows you to explore your emotions and develop solutions with support from the team, without extensive verbal discussion.

What types of issues can Eagala therapy address?

Eagala therapy can help with a wide range of issues, including:

  • PTSD and trauma recovery

  • Addiction and substance abuse

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Relationship challenges and communication difficulties

  • Building confidence and self-esteem

  • Coping with grief, loss, and guilt

The therapy provides veterans a unique way to work through emotional and psychological challenges, leading to healing and positive change.

How does Eagala help with trauma and healing?

Eagala therapy works by helping you process trauma stored in both the body and mind. Horses’ reactions to your movements and energy provide important clues for understanding and releasing trauma. This non-verbal, experiential approach allows you to heal at a deeper level and gain clarity on issues like PTSD, emotional pain, and past trauma.

What makes Eagala different from other therapies?

The Eagala Model is distinct because it integrates the healing power of horses with a team-based approach. While traditional therapies focus on talking through problems, Eagala leverages the unique capacity of horses to help you process emotions and behaviors in a non-judgmental environment. This approach helps veterans build self-awareness, overcome obstacles, and find effective solutions through experiential learning.
